Curved stairlifts

A curved stairlift is any stairlift whose rail has to turn: around a half landing, over winders at the top or bottom, or through two bends. The rail is bent to the exact shape of one staircase, which is why it costs more and takes longer.

Most UK homes with a turn in the stairs can take one. The question is usually which side the rail goes and what happens at each end.

Do these stairs need a curved stairlift?

  • The stairs turn at a half landing, or have wedge-shaped winder steps anywhere in the flight.
  • Two short flights meet at a landing, and the person should not have to change seats halfway.
  • The rail needs to run past the top step and round onto the landing, so the user can get off away from the drop.
  • A park position is needed at the bottom, around the corner from a door or hallway, so the chair is not in the way.

How a curved stairlift gets made and fitted

  1. Survey and photos

The installer measures every step, often with a camera or laser system that photographs the staircase, and agrees with you where the chair parks at each end.

  2. Rail made to measure

The rail is designed and bent for your stairs alone. This is the slow part, and is usually a few weeks, sometimes more for complex stairs.

  3. Fitting day

The rail goes in in sections, fixed to the treads, then the chair is mounted and tested. Most curved lifts take a full working day to fit.

  4. Handover

The user practises with the fitter until they are happy, and you get the manual, the warranty and the details for servicing and breakdowns.

Inside or outside of the turn?

The rail can usually run on either side. On the inside of the bend it is shorter, so it often costs less and leaves the wider part of each step free for others. On the outside it rides at a gentler slope, which some users find more comfortable, but it takes up more of the landing.

The surveyor should show you both if both work, and explain which side the user will step off at the top. That top exit is the part to get right: the chair should end its journey facing away from the stairs, on a level landing, with something to hold.

Why curved stairlifts are rarely sold reconditioned

Because each rail is bent for one staircase, a curved rail from another house will almost never fit yours. Some firms can reuse the chair and make a new rail, which saves a little, but it is not the large saving you see on straight lifts. Which? notes that reconditioned lifts are usually straight for this reason. If cost is the worry, look at renting or a council grant.

Questions families ask

How much does a curved stairlift cost?

Most new curved stairlifts are £4,500 to £8,000 or more, fitted. Which? puts the average at about £4,728. A single bend is at the lower end; two bends or winders at both ends push it up.

How long does a curved stairlift take to arrive?

Usually a few weeks from the survey, because the rail is made for your stairs. If the lift is needed for a hospital discharge, say so at the survey; some firms can rent a temporary solution or prioritise the build.

Can you rent a curved stairlift?

Yes. The upfront payment is larger, around £3,000 with one national retailer, because the rail cannot be used again elsewhere. Monthly fees for complex curved models can reach £150 or more.

Can a curved stairlift go around a spiral staircase?

Many can, as long as the stairs are wide enough for the chair to pass and for the user’s knees. The surveyor will tell you on the first visit.

Is there a grant for a curved stairlift?

A Disabled Facilities Grant can pay for a stairlift of any shape if the council agrees it is needed. It is means tested and is up to £30,000 in England. See stairlift grants.

Can a curved stairlift be moved to a new house?

Rarely. The rail fits only the stairs it was made for. If a move is likely in the next couple of years, renting may suit better.
