Stairlift servicing and repairs
A stairlift is a machine that someone relies on every day, so it needs looking after. An annual service catches worn parts and tired batteries before they leave someone stuck at the top of the stairs.
Many firms will service and repair lifts of other makes, not only their own, which matters if the original fitter has gone out of business.

Signs the stairlift needs looking at
- It beeps at rest, or stops part way and needs a push of the control to restart.
- It runs more slowly than it used to, or does fewer trips before needing to charge.
- There are new noises, grinding or knocking, or the seat feels loose.
- The display shows an error code, or a safety edge seems to stop it for no reason.
- It has not been serviced in over a year.

Safety checks
The engineer tests the safety edges, the seat belt, the swivel lock, the overspeed governor and the limit switches at each end.
Rail and drive
The rail is cleaned and lubricated where the maker says, and the drive gear and rollers are checked for wear.
Power
The batteries are load tested and the charging points checked. Weak batteries are the most common cause of trouble.
Report
You should get a written note of what was checked, anything replaced, and anything that will need attention soon.
Simple things to try before calling an engineer
- Check the key switch is on and the seat is turned fully forward and locked.
- Check the charger is plugged in and switched on at the wall, and that the chair is parked on a charging point.
- Look along the rail for anything in the way: a slipper, a bag, a toy. The safety edges stop the lift if they touch something.
- Turn the lift off with the key, wait a minute and turn it back on.
- If none of that works, do not force it. Call the firm that services it, and give the make, model and any error code.
Questions families ask
How often should a stairlift be serviced?
At least once a year. Lifts used many times a day, or older lifts, may benefit from a check every six months.
How much does a stairlift service cost?
Usually about £100 to £200 for an annual service. Repair work is often charged at about £70 an hour, plus parts.
Can any engineer service my stairlift?
Many independent engineers work on the main makes. Ask whether they hold parts for your model, and be aware that work by someone else may affect a maker’s warranty while it lasts.
Is stairlift servicing VAT free?
Repair and maintenance of eligible equipment for a chronically sick or disabled person can be zero-rated. See section 5 of VAT Notice 701/7.
How long do stairlift batteries last?
Often a few years, but Which? notes they may need replacing as often as every couple of years with heavy use. See our guide to stairlift batteries.
