Stairlift rental
Renting a stairlift means paying a fitting charge and then a monthly fee, with servicing and repairs usually included. When it is no longer needed, the lift is taken away.
It suits short or uncertain needs: recovery after an operation, a terminal illness, a likely move into care, or a family waiting months for a council grant.
- Upfront fitting charge
- £350 to £1,500Usually covers removal later
- Then each month
- About £40 to £150+Straight at the low end, curved at the top
- Minimum hire
- Often 3 months
When renting makes more sense than buying
- The lift is needed for a known, short time, such as recovery from a hip or knee operation.
- Nobody can say how long it will be needed, and the family would rather not spend thousands up front.
- A move into sheltered housing or a care home is likely within a couple of years.
- A council grant has been applied for, but the decision may take months and the stairs are unsafe now.
Worth knowing
- For a long-term need, buying usually works out cheaper after two to three years of monthly fees, especially for a straight lift.
- A Disabled Facilities Grant pays for a stairlift to buy, not for monthly rental, so rental is a stopgap if a grant is coming.

Survey
The firm checks the stairs and agrees the lift, the upfront charge, the monthly fee and the minimum term, in writing.
Fitting
A straight rental lift can often be fitted within days. Curved rental lifts wait for the rail like any curved lift.
Monthly payments
Servicing and breakdown visits are normally included. Check how quickly the firm comes out if it stops.
Ending the hire
Give notice as the contract says. The firm removes the lift; ask whether that is included or charged.

Assumes a £900 fitting charge and £60 a month to rent; £3,000 new and £1,850 reconditioned to buy, plus about £150 a year for servicing after the first year. Removal is usually included in rental and costs about £100 to £150 for a straight lift you own.
Read the rental agreement for these points
- The minimum term, and the notice needed to end it.
- Whether removal at the end is included.
- Whether the monthly fee covers servicing, parts, batteries and call-outs.
- Whether there is an option to buy the lift, and how much of the rent counts towards it.
- What happens to the payments if the user goes into hospital for a while.
Questions families ask
How much does it cost to rent a stairlift in the UK?
Expect a fitting charge of about £350 to £1,500, then about £40 a month for a straight lift from a local supplier, up to £150 or more for a complex curved lift. Which? notes many firms set a minimum term of about three months.
Is it cheaper to rent or buy a stairlift?
For a year or less, renting usually costs less. Over two to three years, buying a straight lift, especially a reconditioned one, usually works out cheaper.
Can you rent a stairlift short term?
Yes. Many firms rent for a few months, for example after an operation. Check the minimum term before you sign.
Is servicing included when you rent?
Usually, yes, along with breakdown visits. Confirm it in writing, and ask about response times.
Can you rent a curved stairlift?
Yes, but the upfront payment is larger, about £3,000 with one national retailer, because the rail is made for your stairs.
Is VAT charged on stairlift rental?
HMRC allows the hire of eligible equipment to a chronically sick or disabled person to be zero-rated too. See section 4 of VAT Notice 701/7 and ask the firm to apply it.
