Outdoor stairlifts

An outdoor stairlift is a weatherproof version of an indoor lift, for the steps up to a front door, down to a garden or between levels on a sloping plot. The motor and controls are sealed, the seat is made to shed water, and the chair parks under a cover.

They can be straight or curved, and they open up a home that is otherwise reachable only by a flight of steps.

When an outdoor stairlift makes sense

  • The front or back door is up or down a flight of steps, and a ramp would be too long or too steep for the space.
  • The garden is on a different level from the house and the person wants to keep using it.
  • The steps are solid (concrete, stone or brick), with room beside them for the rail and the chair.
  • There is, or can be, a safe weatherproof electricity supply near one end of the steps.

Worth knowing

  • Loose gravel paths, timber steps in poor repair or steps that move with the ground need repairing before a rail can be fixed.
  • A wheelchair user who cannot transfer to a seat needs a platform lift or a step lift instead, which is a different and larger job.

How an outdoor stairlift is fitted

  1. Survey of the steps

The installer checks the steps are sound, measures the run and agrees where the chair will park and where the power will come from.

  2. Power first

If there is no outdoor supply, an electrician fits one. This is often done a few days before the lift goes in.

  3. Fitting

The rail is fixed to the steps and the chair mounted. A straight outdoor lift takes about half a day; curved rails longer.

  4. Cover and handover

You are shown how to use the cover and the key switch, and how to keep the rail clear of leaves, ice and snow.

Living with an outdoor stairlift

  • Keep the cover on when the chair is not in use. It protects the seat and the controls from rain and sun.
  • Clear leaves and grit from the rail and keep the path clear in icy weather. Salt can be hard on metal parts, so ask the installer what to use.
  • Book the annual service and ask the engineer to check the seals and the charging contacts.
  • If the lift is at the front of the house, ask about the key switch so it cannot be used by passers-by.

Questions families ask

How much does an outdoor stairlift cost?

A straight outdoor stairlift usually starts at about £4,000 fitted, according to published UK price guides. Curved outdoor lifts cost more, in line with curved indoor lifts.

Do outdoor stairlifts work in the rain?

Yes. They are built for it, with sealed motors and controls and a seat that sheds water. The cover keeps the chair dry when parked, so the seat is dry when you sit on it.

Do I need planning permission for an outdoor stairlift?

Usually not for a lift fixed to existing steps at a house. A listed building, a flat or a home in a conservation area can be different, so check with the council before ordering.

Can a council grant pay for an outdoor stairlift?

Yes. GOV.UK lists improving access to the home and to the garden among the things a Disabled Facilities Grant can pay for.

Is an outdoor stairlift better than a ramp?

A ramp is better if there is space for a gentle slope and the person uses a wheelchair or walker. Where the rise is too high for a ramp to fit, a stairlift is often the practical choice.
