Stairlifts in Sheffield

Sheffield is built on seven hills, and plenty of its terraces and semis have steps to the front door as well as a steep staircase inside. A stairlift often needs to deal with both.

We can put you in touch with a stairlift fitter who covers Sheffield, Rotherham and the surrounding area, from Hillsborough and Crookes to Woodseats and the Dearne.

What Sheffield homes usually need

  • Stone and brick terraces often have steep, narrow staircases, sometimes with winders turning at the top or bottom. Winders mean a curved rail.
  • Back-to-back and through-terrace layouts may put a door at the foot of the stairs. A hinged rail keeps the doorway clear when the lift is parked upstairs.
  • Steps up from the road, or down to a back garden on a slope, are common across the city. An outdoor stairlift is one answer; a handrail on both sides is a cheaper first step if the person can still manage them.
  • Bungalows built into hillsides sometimes have a flight of steps to the door with no other way in. Outdoor lifts suit these well if the steps are solid.

Getting help through the council in Sheffield

Sheffield City Council sets out its own criteria for equipment and adaptations, and a stairlift starts with an assessment of need through adult social care. A GP or hospital team can refer you.

For private homes, the council buys stairlifts through a term contract: it accepted a £500,000 tender for stairlifts and associated works in private sector adaptations for 2022 to 2025 (decision recorded March 2023). Grant-funded lifts may be fitted by the council’s contractor.

The Disabled Facilities Grant can be up to £30,000 and is means tested. Wait for written approval before ordering anything.

Stairlift questions from Sheffield

How much does a stairlift cost in Sheffield?

About £2,000 to £4,000 for a new straight lift and £4,500 to £8,000+ for a curved one, fitted. A reconditioned straight lift is about £1,200 to £2,500.

Will Sheffield City Council pay for my stairlift?

If an assessment finds you need one and you qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant, the council may pay for all or part of it. The grant is means tested.

Can I choose my own stairlift firm with a grant?

Ask the council. Some councils fit grant-funded lifts through their own contractor; others let you choose. If you pay yourself, you can choose any firm.

Is an outdoor stairlift a good idea for steep front steps?

Often, yes, where the steps are sound and a ramp would not fit. Outdoor lifts start at about £4,000 fitted for a straight run.

How long does a curved stairlift take in Sheffield?

Usually a few weeks from the survey, because the rail is made to measure, then about a day to fit.
