Stairlifts in Liverpool
Liverpool has a lot of two-up two-down and larger Victorian terraces, and many of their staircases are steep and narrow, sometimes with winders at the top. Almost all of them can take a stairlift. The survey decides whether a slim straight lift will do or the rail has to turn.
We can put you in touch with a stairlift installer who covers Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside, from Bootle and Crosby to Garston, Huyton and the Wirral.

What Liverpool stairs usually need
- Narrow terraced staircases often suit a slim straight lift with a folding seat, footrest and arms, so others can still pass. Ask the surveyor for the folded width against the width of your stairs.
- Winders at the top (the wedge-shaped steps that turn onto the landing) are common in older terraces. They mean a curved rail, even though most of the flight is straight, which moves the price into the curved range.
- A front door that opens straight onto the bottom step is another terrace feature. A hinged rail that folds out of the way, or a rail that starts on the second step, solves it.
- Steps up to the front door from the pavement are common in parts of Liverpool too. An outdoor stairlift can help, but check the steps belong to you and are sound first.
Getting help through the council in Liverpool
Liverpool City Council funds stairlifts for eligible residents through the Disabled Facilities Grant. The route starts with an adult social care referral for an occupational therapy assessment; a GP or hospital team can make the referral for you.
If the council agrees a stairlift is needed, the grant is means tested and can be up to £30,000. Neighbouring councils in Merseyside, such as Knowsley, list stair lifts among the major adaptations their grant covers. Do not order a lift before the grant is approved.
Council and housing association tenants should ask their landlord first, as many social landlords in the city run their own adaptations service.

Stairlift questions from Liverpool
How much does a stairlift cost in Liverpool?
Prices in Liverpool are close to the national picture: about £2,000 to £4,000 for a new straight lift and £4,500 to £8,000+ for a curved one, fitted. A reconditioned straight lift is about £1,200 to £2,500.
Can you fit a stairlift on narrow terraced stairs?
Usually, yes. Slim straight lifts fold up close to the wall. If the stairs are very narrow, a perch or standing seat may be suggested. The free survey checks the width with the seat folded and in use.
Does Liverpool City Council pay for stairlifts?
It can, through a Disabled Facilities Grant, after an occupational therapy assessment. The grant is means tested, except for disabled children.
How quickly can a stairlift be fitted in Liverpool?
A straight lift can often be fitted within a week or two of the survey. A curved lift waits for its rail to be made, usually a few weeks.
Do I pay VAT on a stairlift in Liverpool?
Not if the user is chronically sick or disabled and it is for their home. The relief is national, set by HMRC VAT Notice 701/7.
